Well, we made it! Another election behind us. You can either celebrate or commiserate over this wine I’m about to describe below.
While on a mini-vacation last week, my husband and I happened upon this wine from Caymus called Red Schooner. We tried it at one of the best chain restaurants across the country, known as Houston’s down south- around Chicagoland it’s called Bandera. FYI: They stock a fantastic wine selection and their servers have everything down to a science when you ask for wine recommendations. We were not disappointed this time around when we asked about Red Schooner.
First of all, Caymus makes a bitchin’ Cab and it’s produced out in Napa by the Wagner Family. Probably my husband’s favorite Cabernet ever. We were intrigued when we heard about the idea of Red Schooner which got it’s name from the actual boat the Wagners use to transport grapes from Argentina up to Napa where they produce this wine.
When our bartender poured the wine, it was the color of oxblood. It smelled and tasted jammy with notes of plum, spice and vanilla. This is a very rich, chewy wine. I would recommend drinking it with friends and each of you sticking to one glass. I love a robust wine, but I could not finish the last glass and I felt pretty darn bad about it. Live and learn, I supposed. Some wines are meant to be savored in small doses and others are so silky smooth, you wonder what happened to the bottle.
The Red Schooner at Houston’s was $58 which is an unbeatable price, because it retails for about $50!!! I love this restaurant even more now. Overall, I think I would recommend the restaurant more than the wine in terms of value, experience and taste.
