There’s so many good wines to share lately that I’m having trouble knowing where to begin. Chronologically probably works best.
There’s this little wineshop in downtown St Charles called The Wine Exchange. They have wine tastings every Friday and Saturday for members and their guests. A friend and I braved the winter elements to check it out recently. The lineup was fun, but this wine stood out strongly along with one other that I will write about very soon. We loved talking to the owner who not only knew a lot about wine, but a lot of the people behind it too. He happened to know Heidi Barrett, who previously worked at Screaming Eagle winery (also known as the first lady of wine because of her cult Cabernets) and her husband Bo who is the current winemaker at Chateau Montelena (remember when I wrote about the movie, Bottleshock?) Anyway, it was a fascinating, albeit, brief conversation and I can’t wait to hear more stories down the road.
Tenet wines makes The Pundit which is a Syrah from Columbia Valley in Washington State. The label on the wine is a closeup of an owl with an intense, green-eyed stare. At first glance, I thought it was an eagle and semi-joked/semi-hoped it was a bottle of Screaming Eagle. Pretty obvious that I’ve never tried it because I’m sure it runs on the higher end for a bottle and I have no idea what the label looks like. That’s how the conversation got started on the who’s who in Napa. Stay with me here, I know I’m digressing again.
The Pundit was an inky violet color and full-bodied. Aromas of dark fruits like blackberry and blueberry wafted from the glass. I tasted a hint of leather, coffee and smoked dark chocolate with a dash of lavender on the finish. A unique wine, but also very drinkable because of how smoothly the flavors all melded together. I’d definitely buy this again!
You can purchase this bad boy for $19.99 at your local wineshop.
