The Olympics may be over, but you can still keep the flame alive by opening a bottle of the Torchbearer Cabernet. This one comes from Oakville in Napa, CA. I couldn’t find much of a backstory on this winery so if anyone can enlighten me on the origin of the name and possible affiliation with the Olympics, send me a note will you?
This wine took a little while to open up, but once it did it was extremely pleasant to drink. Not like a punch you in the face Cab, but more of a shy wine that shares a little more every time you take another sip. That’s what kept it interesting because the flavors kept changing and deepening…basically playing hard to get. 😉
It tasted of dark fruits, earth and oak with a little star anise and other spices with a finish that was peppery. We paired this with crudités and sharp white cheddar with Triscuits. A perfect way to cap off a Sunday.
Your local wine shop is selling this for about $20.
