This wine was a favorite at a wine tasting we attended in Galena not long ago. Of all the wines, this one consistently stood out in the crowd. (It was also a tad more expensive than most, if not all the wines that were sampled.)
The grapes are grown in the Paso Robles region of California which is between L.A. and San Francisco. The climate has the greatest fluctuation between hot days to give the grapes more flavor and cool nights to round out the balance of the wine. Justin Vineyard has been around for 25 years and wine critics have begun to finally take notice over the past few years giving it numerous awards. Just recently, Wine Enthusiast named it Winery of the Year.
Isosceles is composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc and 9% Merlot. So just like the triangle, this triple blend really works well together. It is a garnet/purple color in the glass. It’s a great sip from the start. The flavors are rich with notes of baking spices, chocolate, cherries and really opens up the more you drink it. I write about a lot reds, but this blend is remarkably distinctive in its flavor. This is a superb example of a red blend at its finest. Worth the splurge every now and then.
You can find it at Trader Joe’s for about $65 or, for a limited time, Costco for $58. Enjoy it with smoked or grilled meats. We paired ours with grilled salmon and it was delicious. The perfect way to cap off Mother’s Day.
