    • You Really Shouldn’t Have

      Regift

The holidays are busy and stressful so let’s lighten things up and talk about regifting.

I think my first memory of a regift was when I was seven.  My grandma had gone to all of the banks and stores in the area collecting pencils throughout the year and gave my brother and I each a bunch wrapped in curling ribbon.  One had a John Deere Logo, another a local grocery store emblem.  My brother and I exchanged bewildered looks and moved on to the next gifts; chocolate covered mints and a check for $20.  (Internal sighs of relief) We thanked her and my grandpa and thank you notes were mailed within a day or two.  Come on, we were a little spoiled, I’ll admit, but we weren’t complete a-holes.

My other grandma was guilty of regifting on a much grander scale.  In fact, it became somewhat of a joke with one of her “gifts.”  One year she decided to wrap up an old coat my grandpa used to wear and gave it to my dad.  Now, keep in mind that this coat was probably 20 years old and, living on a farm, it had its fair share of stains and rips too.  Still, for some reason my grandma thought it would make the perfect gift.  The coat was secretly exchanged between my dad and his brother-in-law…until one year they were not so discreet, my grandma found out and that was the end of the brown, shabby coat.

      Christmas Vacation Cat Box

Let us not forget Clark Griswold’s family Christmas.  This movie was our family tradition to watch each year.  I can quote practically every line from it.  Something to add that to my resume.  Ha!  For those of you not familiar with it, the GIF above is when Aunt Edna went through her house wrapping up gifts and one of them was her cat.  Rusty replies, “Great, can’t wait to see what I get.”

Recently, I received a gift from a student where I volunteer.  I am guessing my student (or the mom?!) went through the house and found something a teacher might like and decided to bring it in which is pretty cute (if it was the kid, but a little crazy if Mom did it).   The gift made no sense and in the interest of discretion I will not divulge what it was, but I had to smile when I opened it because it reminded me of the regifts of Christmas’ past which prompted this post.

      Regift

Maybe I am not using the term ‘regift’ correctly.  Usually a regift is something you received originally as a gift, but did not care for so you passed it along to someone you think would appreciate it.  Were the gifts above repurposed?  I don’t think there is a correct term for what those were.  We might have to make one up like Seinfeld did on the label maker episode.  Thrifty-gifty, Junkyard Santa, Mrs. Claus’ Nightmare Knick Knacks, Gingerbread House Leftovers, Closet Purge Presents or Gift Imposter.  Thoughts?

Let me clarify regifting a little further.  If there is a gift that is in mint condition and relatively new, then by all means pass it on to someone who might appreciate it and possibly with the disclaimer that it’s not a gift, but more of an extra.  A few of my friends and family have done this and I have loved what I received: a Coach purse, a silverware organizer, gloves, shirts, the list goes on.  That’s spreading the love and definitely not regifting.

So now I leave it to you readers,  I’m sure you all have at least one good regift story to share.  I can’t be the only one to experience the gamut of emotions, from being excited to open the gift, then puzzled, followed by starting to get a little pissed off and finally laughing about it later.

girard-2010-sauvignon-blanc This Wine On Wednesday is a twofer and sorry, but I couldn’t resist adding the line above from one of Billy Joel’s greatest hits.  Last Sunday, I tasted some exceptional sparkling and white wines at a bridal shower.  The standout wine at this event was the Girard Sauvignon Blanc.  Now, let me clue you in with the fact that I usually don’t care for Blancs because they taste rather bland on my palette, but not this one!  It’s a Chardonnay drinkers wine, but without the oakiness.  This wine has great depth of flavors with lemon at the forefront.  The finish is smooth and citrusy.  I enjoyed it with a mushroom and chicken baked pasta which tasted phenomenal together.  Actually, I have another Blanc to write about so maybe I was just drinking the wrong Blancs in the past.

You can find Girard at Costco for under $20.

Rating:  🍷🍷🍷out of 4 wine glasses J Davies Cabernet 2005

Later that evening my husband planned a cozy dinner with two friends he’s known since high school and their families.  They all brought over their best wines and cheeses to sample.  What a spread!  Since it was Sunday and it was back to work for everyone the next day, we saved a few bottles to open another time.  The favorite wine by far that we tried was the J Davies 2005 Cabernet.  This wine is grown in the Diamond Mountain District of Napa.  (I didn’t know there was such an area until now.)  This wine was extremely complex.  There is no better way to describe it because you could taste so many things in just a sip.  It wasn’t like the young, juicy, vibrant wines I normally drink.  This was more refined and slowly opened up the more I drank.  I definitely tasted an earthy, loamy flavor right from the start.  The finish was smooth and rich with flavors of cocoa and vanilla.  This wine is 83% Cabernet and 17% Malbec.  The grapes grow in clay-laden soil on the Diamond Mountain hillside.  My husband’s friend and his wife visited this winery and joined their wine club so this will have to be another one to add to our ever-growing list of places to visit in Napa.  If you’re looking for a special occasion wine to drink or know a few folks who appreciate good wine, then go for this one!  Oh, another fun fact on this winery is that they specialize in sparkling wine and it is the official sparkling wine for the White House since Nixon was in office.

    • W.O.W. Rotari Sparkling Rose

      Rotari Rose Brut

Welcome back to Wine On Wednesday.  Apologies for the absence, but I have been drinking researching many wines to share with you and finally have a good one to report back.  With the holidays and especially, New Year’s it’s good to have a few Champagnes/sparkling wines around to celebrate.  Rotari Rose is one of these to keep on hand because it tastes phenomenal, is surprisingly affordable and looks so pretty when poured.

This wine scored a 90 from Wine Enthusiast for it’s light touches of peach, cranberry and grapefruit.  The finish tastes like warm baked bread.

Personally, I love the amount of bubbles, it’s ultra feminine pink color and smooth taste.  Sometimes a sparkling wine can be too sweet or too dry, but this one was just right.  The price is right too at $9.99 from Costco.  This is one sparkling wine that gives you a lot of bang for your buck.  Perfect for your next ladies night in, book club, or holiday brunch if you are hosting one this year.

Rating: 🍷🍷🍷out of 4 wine glasses.

      Cheers!

      • Christmas Bowl

Hello!  Here’s an easy and inexpensive idea to bring some greenery indoors.  Just grab a couple of bags of apples from the supermarket, add them to a big bowl and intersperse some evergreens along the perimeter of the bowl.  We have arborvitae out back around our patio so I just cut those with scissors and the result is beautiful.

This bowl is one I bought last year from Target.  The red and green gives this neutral room a pop of festive color.

A nice bonus from keeping fruit out is that my kids can easily grab one as a snack….or guests.

      Sparkling Wine

On a side note, I made a trip to Costco yesterday and found some amazing deals on Champagne and red wines.  (Technically, I know it’s sparkling wine unless it’s specifically from the region of Champagne, but the latter just sounds sexier)  I can’t wait to pop these open and share the tasting notes with you.

I’ve been procrastinating the reviews from the wine from Thanksgiving because the Cannon Ball was not quite what I had hoped it would be, but my mom shared a bottle of Veuve Clicquot for us to drink to celebrate my brother and his husband’s second wedding Anniversary.  That Champagne is always so smooth and drinkable.  Love it!

      Have a lovely weekend!
