      Apothic Dark

If you aren’t quite into the Halloween spirit yet, try a sip of this delicious wine and you will instantly embrace your darker, slightly sinister side.  This wine is a gorgeous, deep purple when you pour it and tastes like coffee and berries.  The cork is a distinctive black and falls into the keeper category if you hoard wine corks.  At under $8 from Wal-Mart you really can’t beat the price either.  This is a limited release so try it while you still can.

Bottom line: this wine is not subtle or tightly wound.  It packs a punch and has a heavy, velvety feel on your tongue.

We drank the Apothic at our last book club meeting to discuss A Discovery Of Witches.  The book is obviously about witches, but there are a few vampires and demons* tossed into the mix too.   If you have an appreciation for wine, the author also taps into that topic quite a bit as well.  😉

Besides this wine, there were a few others that we tried at the meeting, all receiving glowing reviews.  (To be written about in the future.)

Do you have any plans to dress up this Halloween?  If our costumes turn out, I might share those with you next week so stay tuned…

    • W.O.W. Russian River Valley Chardonnay

      Chardonnay

There is something to be said for breaking out of a routine (or rut, as I like to call it) and trying something new.  I do this with recipes, working out, planning vacations, wine, you name it.  Of course, some of those recipes can be a complete flop and same goes for the wine, but when you find something you love it makes it all the sweeter.  Where have you been my whole life you think and into the sacred recipe box it goes along with all the other tried-and-true favorites.

I took this chance the other day when I was stocking up at Costco.  I was veering toward my usual $6.99 Kirkland Chardonnay, when I spied their Signature Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2013 first.  The rating it had received from Wine Enthusiast was outstanding at a solid 100 points.  That rating bolstered my confidence as well as the price tag; for $12.99 I bought two bottles.  After trying it, I think I need to get some more before the holiday season arrives.

The Russian River Valley has a longer growing season than most regions in Napa which make it ideal for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes and give those wines more depth and richness.  (Nerd Alert) I did not know any of this and I am simply restating what I just read because I was curious about this region.

Let’s get down to business and say why this wine is worthy of your attention.  If you like apples, pear, fig along with a spicy, oakey finish that doesn’t quit (lingering on the palette long after the first sip), then you must try this wine as soon as humanly possible.

      Cheers my friends!

      Penfolds

Happy last day of September!  Chilly weather equals a change over to red wine, don’t you think?  For you fans of white, not to worry, I have a new white to write about just as soon as I try it.  Which I hope will be over the weekend when we are planning to grill salmon.

The Penfolds Cabernet Shiraz was compliments of a good friend who also happens to love wine.  She shared this bottle with me recently and we both agreed that the color was beautiful and deep, the flavors very smooth and typical of a Cabernet with lots of fruit like cherries with a spicy finish from the Shiraz.  You can buy this wine at your local wine store for just under $20.  I would save this wine for a night to hang out with friends that you haven’t seen in a while…which is exactly what we did.  🙂

Thank you Debbie for a fun night.  Let’s plan another one very soon!

      Blood Moon

I bet most of you caught a glimpse of the Super/Blood Moon last night, right?  I was able to capture a couple of okay shots on my Canon camera, but things like breathing got in the way of a perfectly clear photo.  After many failed attempts, I decided to simply enjoy the view with my own eyes.  What a sight!  Still, a tripod might have to go on my wish list for Christmas.

      Super Moon

Here’s a view of the Super Moon as it began to rise at around 7:00.

      Super Moon

I raced inside to grab the girls shoes and we walked down the street to get a less obstructed view.  I was about to take the picture, when the clouds began to float in.  Nooooooo!

Luckily the clouds parted and I was able to capture the eclipse in the first photo at around 9:45 p.m. And now, 18 more years to wait until the next Super Moon eclipse.  Hmmm…maybe we’ll have to plan a family trip to fall around October 8, 2033.  I picture all of us sipping a cocktail along the beach or out on the balcony of a rustic lodge watching the moon rise together.  No rush though, now it is one day at a time…or make that one minute at a time on certain days.  😉
