    • W.O.W. Far Niente Chardonnay

      far niente

If coffee is like a hug in a cup (which it very much is), then wine is love in a bottle.  In terms of alcoholic beverages there is nothing more romantic than the story behind each wine, the different labels all carefully chosen, the cork which is so much more beautiful than a twist-top and the attention and devotion to the lovely little grapes that create these fantastic wines.  Yes, I have more than just a crush (bad pun) on wine.  I have truly fallen head over heels.  (Not literally.  Although maybe stumbled from its effects.)

Thank you Allison for this recommendation.  When we were planning our trip to Napa a year ago, she suggested this winery, and although we never made it there, it is definitely a place we will visit the next time we make it out there.  Far Niente means, “sweet to do nothing” in Italian.  This winery focuses solely on Chardonnay and Cabernet.  Their 2013 Chardonnay tastes buttery and oakey with a hint of lemon.  My husband and I shared a bottle down in Arizona with some sushi.  You could also try it with roasted chicken.  Check out my Valentine menu on Red Typewriter’s latest post for a romantic dinner for two.

This wine is a tad more expensive than usual Wine On Wednesday selections, but with Valentine’s Day I thought I would toss out a special wine this time-and I was overdue for a white, don’t you think?  You can find it at your local wine store for about $70, which is crazy because on the menu at Hillstone it sold for $60.  Apparently Arizona has a connection to California that the Midwest is lacking.

Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day this weekend.  Cheers my dears!

    • Planning For The NFL Experience and Super Bowl

Posted at 7:00 am by Lisa Cavallari
      Feb 5th

      AZ Biltmore

Sorry for the lack of a wine article yesterday.  We just got back from Arizona and I wanted to share the pictures in case any of you or your significant others have Super Bowl on the bucket list.

The trip started off sunny the first day, but then it rained for the next three days.  Our hotel placed sandbags in front of our cottage to ward off any flooding.

      Super Bowl No Autographs

A sign posted outside the workout room at our hotel.  There were no exciting stars to be found…only guys young and old who didn’t appear to use the gym enough.

On Friday afternoon my husband and I went to NFL Experience in downtown Phoenix.  This is the perfect place for families and fans to get their fill of all things football.

      NFL Experience Autographs

They had an autograph section sponsored by Topps.

      NFL Experience Sewing Football

Wilson (the official ball for the NFL) sold footballs made by hand right in front you.  They start off by sewing the football.

      NFL Experience Steaming Footballs

Next they steam it in that black box above to soften the leather.

      NFL Experience Flipping Football

Then they place it on a metal rod to turn it inside out.  This is probably the toughest part.  My husband has seen huge football players try to turn the ball out and they struggled big time.

      NFL Experience Lacing Football

The ball is then passed along to the woman who adds the laces.

      NFL Experience Finishing Football Spray

Finally,  they add your name and douse it with their secret spray to keep the letters from smudging.  There you have it.  This whole process is truly and unfortunately, a dying craft.

      NFL Experience Kicking Ball

Moving on to the kids area – they offered areas for wind sprints as well as kicking and tossing the football around.

      NFL Experience Face Paint

There was a craft area for children to color their own t-shirts or get a Super Bowl or NFL logo airbrushed on their cheek.

      NFL Experience Super Bowl Ring

If diamonds and other gemstones make your heart all aflutter, then check out the Super Bowl rings of the past.  The video they played while standing in line portrayed the ONLY time you will ever see a grown man swoon over a piece of jewelry.

      Super Bowl First SB Ring

Tiffany and Co. creates all the rings for the Super Bowl champions.  Here is the first ring ever made.  So simple, right?

      NFL Experience SP Bears Ring

Da’ Bears!  Engraved on each ring is the team, year and player’s name.

      NFL Experience Seahawks Ring

Comparing the most recent game ring back to the first one; that’s a lot of bling.

We could have spent many more hours at The Experience, but it was getting late and we needed to grab something other than nachos and a hot dog for dinner.  I would highly recommend attending The NFL Experience when/if you make it to the Super Bowl.  The cost is $20-$35/person and there is so much to see and do that I barely scratched the surface.

      Super Bowl Tailgate Sign

Another experience other than the game that I would strongly encourage is the Tailgate Party.  This gives you a hassle-free entry to the game and allows you to sample and people watch to your heart’s content.  Ignore the awful tags hanging from my neck and gym shoes.  I go for comfort all the way on game day.  Sure you can wear heels, but they would be sinking into the grass, mud and other unknown gunk you walk through.  Keep in mind that it is mostly guys that surround you and they can be, well, guys/gross/unhygienic/wasted.  Oh, and no purses or bags allowed unless they are clear or small like a wristlet.

      Super Bowl Tailgate Dancers

Dierks Bentley and Gavin McGraw played while guests mingled/ogled.  Interesting costumes above the bar that served amazing Bloody Marys.  Those three-dimensional round things are drums.  We sampled the steak tacos, guacamole with pumpkin seeds and for dessert, vanilla cream sorbet with a hint of cinnamon.  This was not your typical tailgate fare.  They also had a dozen or so different kinds of chilis for the chili cookoff, Mahi Mahi tacos, cowboy salad (corn, rice, beans and lots of spices) and plenty of other desserts.  You will not leave the party hungry.

      Super Bowl Arena

Before we knew it, it was time to head into the game.

      Super Bowl Fans

Seahawk fans won for most outrageous team spirit.  Many donned outfits that were colorful and memorable.

      Super Bowl National Anthem

This picture and the entire Super Bowl encapsulate what it means to be an American.  When the jets flew overhead you couldn’t help, but get a little choked up.  I also couldn’t get a mental picture of Elsa singing the National Anthem out of my head.  Thank you Frozen.

      Super Bowl Lights

For the Halftime show they gave us these nifty little finger lights.

      Super Bowl Light Instructions

Instructions were included for those who were sober enough to read them.

Super Bowl Halftime Show Blue Lights

      Start of the Halftime show.

      Super Bowl Harrington

After the show some of my husband’s co-workers ran into pro golfer, Padraig Harrington.

      Super Bowl Finale

Storming the field.  By far, the best Super Bowl yet with some gutsy game plays and a close score the entire time.  Even if you are not a huge fan of the game or for the teams involved, this is one event that is worth witnessing at least once in your lifetime.

    • Wine On Wednesday – Midnight

Let’s cut right to the chase and talk Menage a Trois.

      THIS Menage…

      NOT this Menage…

      th_menage-a-trois

Geez.  You guys are sick.  I like you.  🙂

This bottle was actually a referral from my mom.  Okay, feeling a little awkward about that bit of information, but I always like to give credit where credit is due and my mom does a darn good job of picking out wines.  She asks her local wine shop for recommendations, narrows down her choices based on what she likes and has yet to disappoint when she brings a few bottles along each time she visits.

When she brought this wine for Thanksgiving, I raised an eyebrow and began to protest, but she insisted it was good and as the name implies, it is dark, seductive and rich in flavor.  Midnight is a blend of not three, but four wines: a Merlot, Cabernet, Petit Syrah and Petit Virdot.  The flavors I tasted were mocha and blackberry.   Maybe I need to revisit the other reds that this label has to offer!

You can find this for around $12 at your nearest wine store.  With Valentine’s Day not that far off, go for something risqué.  It would pair beautifully with a filet and molten lava cake for dessert.  I’m just sayin’…

      Cheers my dears!

    • Wine On Wednesday – Rex Goliath

Posted at 7:00 am by Lisa Cavallari
      Jan 21st

      Rex Goliath Merlot

This wine from Rex-Goliath was a perfect pairing with the chicken we enjoyed recently.  In fact, a Merlot can be paired with all kinds of fowl like pheasant or duck.   Merlot has a tendency to be velvety and fruity.  This one tasted of plums and cherries.  Quite a few years back Merlot was extremely popular and then Sideways came along (still love that movie regardless) and suddenly the jubilant, luscious grape became tarnished and was no longer deemed a suitable drinking companion.   Luckily, Merlot is steadily on the rise thanks to great vineyards like Duckhorn and Decoy.  Ha!  I realize now how they probably came up with those label names.  Food pairing is key!

This brand of wine was another recommendation from the same friend as last week.  Thanks again, K!  I was perusing the wine aisle at our local Meijer, when I happened across a deal I could not refuse, 2 bottles for $10?!  Sold.  I had tried the Cabernet before and thought Merlot would pair better with the chicken for the Coq Au Vin.  (The Merlot was a suggestion from Bobby Flay and I trust that guy with anything food and wine related. He’s awesome.)  So I grabbed one of each and was on my merry way.

Most chefs recommend that you cook with a wine that you would drink.  Makes sense.  In my humble opinion I also don’t think the wine needs to be expensive either.  I know I would have trouble pouring half a bottle of a $50 wine into whatever I am cooking rather than drink it straight out.  When the wine is $5 a bottle, however this task is much easier to do.  Go out and give this one a try.

      Cheers my dears!
