    • Sydney’s Art Party

My oldest daughter is turning 6 today!  We celebrated her birthday last Saturday and the party theme she chose was arts and crafts.

      Art Party Sign

I am not that adept (yet) at creating signs and printing them from my simple Epson printer so I just added some clip art, slapped the sign on a painter’s palette and used a giant pink clothes pin to keep it from blowing away from the front door.

      Art Party

When the kids first came in we had a table set up to create sand art.

      IMG_3754

Then the painting began.  Each child had his or her own canvas to paint.

      Art Party Decor

I sewed crêpe paper streamers to a pretty ribbon to drape behind each chair.

      Tissue Pom Poms

Tissue pom poms were hung from the ceiling.  Talk about easy to make!  The tutorial on YouTube was 4 minutes from start to finish.

      Art Party

I found the plastic tablecloth  and little paint palettes from Oriental Trading Company.  There were markers on the table for the kids to fill in silly faces on some of picture frames, but they were so focused on the painting that they never made it that far.  I played it safe and used only washable tempera paint.

We used Hydrangea from our front yard to give the kids some inspiration.

The bottles of water were flavored strawberry, lemon-lime, blueberry and grape by Crayola.

      Art Party

      Art Party T-shirt

While she painted, the birthday girl wore a new t-shirt designed by my friend who runs an adorable online store called Little Mac Boutique.  Check it out for your next birthday or special occasion.  She makes tutus, bows, leg warmers and more. Thank you Michelle!

      Art Party Dessert Table

      Art Party Dessert Table

Here is the dessert table.  Sydney picked out a nail polish cake from Pinterest for me to bake.  I made the cake using 6 8-inch round cakes and topped it with 3 cupcakes (2 with their tops cut off) for the handle.  To keep the cake in place, I added three wooden skewers pressed into the middle and then placed the cupcake handle on top of them.  Refrigeration also firms up the cake and prevented it from sliding.

I made the art studio sign from a large piece of plywood and painted it with chalkboard paint.

      Nail Polish Cake

She looks intimidated here…and excited.  There are edible pink candies encircling the bottom and top.  This close-up reveals that this cake was definitely homemade.  Notice the slight lean to the left and not the smoothest job of frosting it, but hey, I made it and she loved it so that’s all that matters.

      Art Party Cake

The inside of the cake.  I found a tie-dye boxed cake at the grocery store and grabbed three boxes.  This took some effort, but it was worth it.

      Care for a slice?

      Art Party

I used paint chip samples and stapled them to create utensil holders.

      Art Party Dessert Table

      More sweets.

      Art Party Paint Brush Treats

Sugar overload.  But wait, can you see the rainbow fruit skewers just off to the right?  See? Healthy!

As a memento, my friend Carrie suggested a larger canvas or poster board for the kids to draw on and express their birthday wishes.  It was cute and funny to see what they wrote and drew.

      Art Party

After cake, it was time to burn off some energy so they went outside and I handed each party guest a can of silly string from the Dollar Store.  That was a hit, but there wasn’t much string in each can so a lot of them asked if I had anymore.  Luckily, the weather was beautiful so they enjoyed running around the backyard and playing on the play set.

      Art Party Favors

As their take home gift, I found more goodies from OTC.  Artist palette lollipops, little notebooks, pencil sharpeners and behind the little notebooks is a small bag of Goldfish colored crackers.

I am a HUGE believer in writing thank you notes.  If people are generous enough to take time from their busy schedules to celebrate with you, not to mention bring along a thoughtful gift, then it is important to show some gratitude and manners -in my humble opinion- by thanking them for it.  I found these paint-splashed notes at Target.

This party took some planning, but it could not have gone more smoothly.  A big thanks to Rochelle and Glenda who stayed to help with the crafts and cleaning up.  I owe you.  🙂

By the time the party was over, I couldn’t believe it was done.  I was definitely ready to sit and relax with a glass of wine.

      Happy Birthday Sydney!

      Flag Cake

What are your plans this 4th of July?  Travel?  Family gathering?  Backyard barbecue?  If you are looking for a statement dessert that serves a crowd then look no further.  This flag cake can be a new tradition to add to your holiday.

      Flag Cake (from Barefoot Contessa)

      serves 20-24

      Ingredients

      For the cake:

18 Tablespoons (2 1/4 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature

      3 cups granulated sugar

6 extra-large eggs, at room temperature

1 cup sour cream, at room temperature

      1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

      3 cups all-purpose flour

      1/3 cup cornstarch

      1 tsp salt

      1 tsp baking soda

      For the icing:

1 pound (4 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature

1 1/2 pounds cream cheese, at room temperature

      1 pound powdered sugar, sifted

      1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

      To assemble:

Approximately 1 half-pint blueberries (discard any moldy or overripe berries)

      Approximately 4 half-pints raspberries

      Directions:

      Heat oven to 350 degrees.  Butter and flour a rectangular sheet pan (18 x 12 x 1 1/2 inch).

      IMG_3687

Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.  Add eggs 2 at a time, combine, then add the sour cream and vanilla.  Scrape down the sides and stir until smooth.

Sift together the flour, cornstarch, salt and baking soda into a separate bowl.  Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture until just combined.  Pour into prepared pan.  Smooth the top with a spatula.

      IMG_3691

Bake in the center of the oven for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick come out clean.  Cool to room temperature.

      IMG_3692

For the icing, combine the butter, cream cheese, sugar and vanilla, mixing just until smooth.

Spread three-fourths of the icing on the top of the cooled sheet cake.  Outline the flag on the top of the cake with a toothpick.  Fill in the upper left corner with blueberries. Place 2 rows of raspberries across the top of the cake like a red stripe.  Put the remaining icing in a pastry bag fitted with a star tip (I used Wilton) and pipe two rows of white stripes below the raspberries.  Alternate rows of raspberries until the flag is completed.  Pipe stars on top of the blueberries.

      • Note:  Due to different sizes of the berries, the flag stripes may look a little wobbly, but that’s okay because it gives it the effect of a wavy flag…or whatever I want to tell myself since I also can’t pipe a straight line to save my life.  People won’t even notice after a drink or two anyway.  😉

Sydney filling in the blueberries.  Atta girl!

Have a safe and happy Fourth!

      Cannoli Dip

Happy belated Father’s Day to all of you awesome dads!  Even though Dad’s Day is over, check out my tribute to Dads on Red Typewriter.  You can take the ideas and use them for upcoming birthdays.

Yesterday morning, the girls and I surprised my husband with handmade cards and a beer mug filled with Werther’s candies and huge marshmallows on top.  I’m glad I planned ahead on this because I have been battling a bit of a bug lately and did not have the energy to do as much throughout the day as I would have liked.

      IMG_3655

My husband enjoyed steak salad, crusty bread and some Caymus Cabernet for dinner – all of his favs.  For dessert, I tried a new cannoli dip with all kinds of fun stuff to use for dipping.

Here’s the cannoli dip recipe.  I modified it slightly from Cooking Classy.

      Cannoli Dip

      Ingredients

      8 ounces mascarpone cheese

      15 ounces ricotta cheese

      2/3 cup powdered sugar

      1/2 cup heavy cream

      1/4 cup miniature chocolate chips

      1/4 cup chopped pistachios

      Directions

Tear off a few sheets of paper towels and carefully scrape the ricotta cheese on the towels.  Squeeze the paper towel gently to remove the moisture from the cheese.  Combine mascarpone and ricotta cheese in a large bowl using a spoon.  Fold in powdered sugar.  In a separate bowl whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.  Gently fold whipped cream into the cheese and sugar mixture.  Add the chocolate chips and carefully combine.  Sprinkle chopped pistachios on top and serve with graham crackers, strawberries or Italian cookies.  (The graham crackers were everybody’s favorite.  It tasted like a s’more.)

Try this dip for your next fun gathering.  It’s easy to make ahead and store in the fridge for a few hours.

(In case you were curious, the cheese board pictured is from One King’s Lane.  An early birthday gift from my mom.  My new entertaining staple.  Thanks Mom!)

    • King For A Day

Posted at 10:06 am by Lisa Cavallari
      May 12th

IMG_3543 A few weeks back my brother, Todd and his husband, Greg (who is French!) came to visit.  The girls had a great time wearing them out and decorating a crown in honor of the King Cake that Greg was about to prepare for us.  This is not your typical New Orleans style King Cake, mind you.  This is a light, flaky pastry with almond filling.  One other thing to note is that it seemed relatively simple to make as I looked on.  Here is the recipe.

King Cake (note: I have converted the measurements to our American way of measuring.)

      Ingredients

      2 eggs

1/2 cup almond powder (finely crushed almonds)

3.6 Tbl butter at room temperature

1/3 cup granulated sugar 1-3 drops almond extract depending on how much you like

2 puff pastry sheets (Greg used Pepperidge Farm)

      Directions

      1. In a medium-sized bowl mix one egg with sugar and almond extract.

      2. Add the almond powder. IMG_3520 3. Place the first puff pastry on a sheet of parchment paper.  The shape of the pastry must be circular so a large mixing bowl turned upside down and placed over the puff pastry works beautifully. Follow the outline of the bowl with a knife.

      3. Spread almond mixture over the puff pastry. IMG_3524 5. Take an object that is oven safe and place it near the outer edge.  Prepare the second sheet puff pastry.  Cut the top sheet to match the bottom, then place it over the first sheet. IMG_3527   6.  Press the edges together, then take a fork and press the tines around the perimeter of the circle.  Cut a few slits in the top to allow air to escape.  Greg scored a pretty square pattern on the top. IMG_3530 5. Using second egg, beat it in a bowl and use a pastry brush to cover the top of the cake.

      4. Bake for 30 minutes at 392 degrees.  (converted from 200 degrees Celsius) Cake will be golden. IMG_3531 7. Allow cake to cool slightly.  Cut into pie pieces and whoever gets the trinket hidden inside is the King for the day.  This would taste great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Sydney found the trinket in her piece.  (We actually just used a pie weight. Boring)  Olivia pouted for a minute… IMG_3537 …until we switched and let her wear the crown.  Sydney then pretended to pout.  Give this a try for Father’s Day and let Dad be King.  Thank you Greg for the first of many (I hope) lessons in French cooking.
