      Present Over Perfect

A dear friend recently told me about a book she finished called Present Over Perfect.  It changed the way she thought about everything life throws at her.  I just read it and admit that, in fact, the book had a profound effect on the way that I want to approach life from here on out too.

Without spoiling what this book has to offer, I want to share some parts that spoke to me.  Believe me, there is no way I could possibly encapsulate everything the author, Shauna shared so this is simply a preview.

As the title so wisely and concisely states, it’s imperative to be aware of your present surroundings instead of striving for the impossible perfect.  Ha!  Yeah, okay.  Easier said than done.  The author talks about her struggle with wanting to make everyone happy and how her faith sets her on the right path toward a slower, more content way of living.  She’s quickly approaching 40, has a busy travel and work schedule, two sons who are under the age of 8 and a supportive husband, but there is a huge hole in this wonderful life.  Her health is not the best, she constantly feels like she’s letting the most important people in her life down and, in turn, pleasing those who could care less about her.  This book puts everything into perspective as she realizes what’s truly important.

Because of this book, these are things I will work very hard not to worry about anymore:

NOT- what other people think. The author said it best, “Of all the things I am learning to leave behind, the heaviest is the opinion of others.”  Let’s face it, we can’t please everyone no matter how hard we try.  I struggled with and continue to struggle with this idea the most.  Trying to control what other people think or say about you is impossible.  In the end, it’s all about being the best person that you can be and when you make a mistake along the way just apologize and move on.  Don’t dwell on feeling guilty or worrying that someone might be mad at you.

NOT- contorting your holidays and special occasions into a Martha Stewart episode.  I’ve learned to dial it back little by little for birthdays and holidays.  I blame Pinterest.  It started with birthday parties for the girls like a circus theme or an art party, then it moved on with Christmas and attempting to make the world’s most difficult dessert.  Damn you Snickers bars to the depths of hell!  Caught up in the frenzy to outdo yourself each year you realize as the author stated here…”I could plunk myself down right in the middle of the mess and realize that the mess is actually my life, the only one I’ll ever get, the one I’m in danger of missing completely, waiting around for the fantastic.”

NOT- acquiring more material things.  She writes, “I like living in a home when it’s less full of stuff.  The simplicity feels spacious, and inspiring, like I can draw a clean breath.”  This is so true.  Cleaning out closets in my house is cathartic.  It’s a wonderful feeling to donate clothes that don’t fit to others and standing back to see how organized they are again puts me in my happy place.

NOT- avoiding situations because something isn’t quite perfect.  Yet another perfectly written sentiment, “The ache for perfection keeps us isolated and exhausted-we keep people at arm’s length, if that, and we keep hustling, trying to reach some sort of ideal that never comes.”  Too many times people say no to things because they’re worried about the way they look, or their house looks or whatever the circumstance.  If people are truly your friends, then it shouldn’t matter if the living room still isn’t painted and there’s a stack of school papers on the kitchen counter.  Your friends will still love you.  Don’t miss out on life because you haven’t achieved the impossible standards you set up for yourself.

NOT-keeping the truth to yourself.  Shauna writes, “There were so many things I left to other people to feel strongly about, so much so that I often bent under the weight of so many other peoples’ strongly held opinions, tired from having to bridge all the gaps around me.  Truth telling, though is both contagious and addictive, and once you start doing it, it’s hard to stop. All of a sudden, opinions fell out of my mouth left and right. I knew so well, so deeply that the areas in which my life went off course were the same areas in which I abdicated responsibility and voice.”

The book has so many ideas, so many pearls of wisdom that I strongly encourage you to read this if you ever feel as if your life is like running a marathon and you can’t catch your breath.  Life isn’t easy and this book simplifies it to make it a little smoother as well as offers ways to be kinder to your family and those close to you but, most of all, to be kinder to yourself.

Thank you Melissa for this motivating read.  I loved it!

      Overnight_Oatmeal

This breakfast is great if you’re looking for a satisfying, healthy and easy breakfast idea. You can eat it at home, in the office or on the go.  It will give you steady energy all morning and it’s the perfect cool option for those steamy summer days.

      Chilled Oatmeal

      • Servings: 1
      • Difficulty: easy
      • Print

      Ingredients

      2/3 cup almond milk

      1/2 cup old fashioned oats

1/2 cup plain or vanilla Greek yogurt

      pinch of cinnamon

fresh fruit diced up (I love it with blueberries and strawberries)

      Directions

Grab a mason jar or any container with a lid.  Combine the almond milk, oats, yogurt and cinnamon and cover tightly.  Refrigerate overnight and enjoy in the morning with the fruit stirred in gently.  You could also add a drizzle of pure maple syrup or agave nectar if you’re craving a little more sweetness.  Enjoy!

      Running

This is not a post about resolutions.  Actually, I hate gyms in January because of the crowds that gradually dwindle (and they always do) by February.  Today, the focus is on running.

Back in the day, I did my fair share of 5 and 10ks.  I even ran a half marathon and that’s when the fun stopped and my knees started hurting so I took it easy for a while.  A year later, I signed up for the Chicago Triathlon and the run at the end sucked BIG TIME.  The pain in my knees was so bad that I walked most of that race and felt my face burn as men as old as seventy passed my twenty-something ass.  Awesome.  Not that I was competitive or anything.  From then on, I ran every now and then, but I never signed up for any races and most of the runs were still painful…until now.

Yep, back in the saddle again.  It feels pretty good too!  I am energized instead of completely drained after working out and excited to report that I signed up for my first race in more than 10 years (gulp) with some friends.

My favorite part about running is the way the music motivates me; it makes me feel light, almost like I’m floating across the ground.  You know that feeling?  Believe me, that doesn’t happen every time I run.  Some days the feet are dragging, my shoulders are slumped and the last thing I feel like doing is going for a run, but those are the days you do what you can and just move on.

Here’s my playlist in no particular order with everything from old school to the new.  I’d love to hear what your favorite songs to run/work out to so I can add them to my list.

How You Like Me Now? – The Heavy

      I’m Blue – Eiffel 65

      Geronimo – Sheppard

Rhythm Is A Dancer – SNAP

      Red Lights – Tiesto

      Big Booty – J Lo

      Sandstorm – Darude

      Connected – Stereo MC

      Bad Blood – Taylor Swift

      Penguin (Club Mix) – Avicii

      Renegades – X Ambassadors

      Turn Around – Flo Rida

Push It – Salt N’ Pepa

      Wasted – Tiesto

      Float On – Modest Mouse

      Stronger – Kanye West

      Dark Horse – Katy Perry

      Toxic – Britney Spears

Summertime Sadness – Lana Del Ray

      Stereo Love – Edward Maya

    • Supply List When Sickness Strikes

Posted at 7:00 am by Lisa Cavallari
      Apr 20th

      Sick Supplies

Batten down the hatches because your child (or entire family) has a fever, a cough or worse, vomiting and diarrhea.  We’ve all been there: sleep-deprived, trying to keep ourselves healthy and prevent the spread of disease in the house of the unwashed.  (Not literally, but it can feel that way!) Running out to buy more supplies is simply out of the question.  Even if you don’t have kids, the last thing you feel like doing when you or your spouse is sick is driving to the store.  Here is a list of items that you can stockpile while you are healthy and avoid any additional discomfort when the inevitable flu or cold is bound to occur.  This list is not entirely comprehensive so please let me know if there is anything you and your family prefer to keep on hand.

      For Your Sick Ones

      • Their own wastebasket or bucket
      • Lots of plastic garbage bags
      • 2 thermometers (1 for upstairs and another for downstairs)
      • Plastic fitted sheet to put on their bed
      • Plastic tablecloths for the couch and to line the floor near the wastebasket
      • A tray to carry drinks and meds
      • Cough drops
      • Tissues
      • Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen (check expiration date)
      • Pepto Bismol
      • Frozen Pedialyte pops (in the store they are not frozen and take up to 48 hours to finally freeze so by then it’s too late)
      • Saltine or Club crackers
      • Ginger Ale
      • Chicken soup
      • Vapor Rub
      • Johnson and Johnson Vapor Bath
      • Humidifier (one for each child)
      • Otoscope (if ear infections are common in your household)

      For Your Home

      • Lots of paper towels
      • Disinfecting spray
      • Laundry detergent
      • Plastic gloves (your hands will be raw from washing them so much)
      • Air purifier

Tips When You’re In The Thick Of It

      • Section off sick and healthy areas.  It will make disinfecting much easier.  I allow the child who is sick to be in her room or in the family room with one bathroom that is only hers to use until she is no longer contagious.
      • Keep a notepad and pen handy to write down their temperature, how many times they vomited, etc.  It helps keep track of it all when your brain turns to mush and the nurse on the phone needs specifics.
      • This gem is from a mom who said she saved their old crib mattress and lets her child sleep on that instead of her bed.  It’s lower to the ground and if they are vomiting, there is less chance for missing the bucket.  Good one C!
      • Open the windows.  Even if it’s arctic cold, letting some fresh air into the house for a few minutes can help clear the stale air.
      • If you are battling this on your own because your husband is out of town or works late, take up any kind offers from other moms to pick things up while they are out.  They really DO want to help and YOU really should not feel guilty for asking them to grab whatever it is you need.  It is amazing how moms will band together in times of need and pretty neat to witness.  I admit that I need to be better about accepting help myself so this is something to work on.
      • Try to grab a nap or put your feet up if your little one is napping.  If that isn’t possible, and believe me I have been there, then delegate some duties to your husband when he gets home so that you can rest.
      • For the children who are healthy and want to play it can be hard to keep them entertained and quiet.  Try to have a new book,  DVD or game on hand so they can have fun without relying on you to come up with something new to do.
      • Take a deep breath and remember that this too shall pass.  It is stressful and heart-breaking to see your child so sick and helpless.  If you’ve been going nonstop all day, treat yourself to a hot shower and a glass of wine when the hubby gets home.  You’ve earned it!

      Sick Sydney

This post was inspired by the extreme episode of vomiting my oldest experienced last week.  Plastic became my new best friend and I don’t think I’ve done that much laundry since she was a baby.  She was vomiting about every 15 minutes for 12 hours straight and, at one point, it became projectile.  Through her tears she said, “Mom, it was like a fountain coming out of me!”  The famous scene from The Exorcist now has nothing on us.  Luckily, our doctor finally prescribed some Zofran and that settled her stomach.

Be prepared and stay strong out there everyone.
