Recently, my husband and I attended a dinner honoring NFL Hall of Fame members and future inductees.  This was my second time at the annual dinner and I was looking forward to meeting some of the players, enjoying some drinks and most of all, hearing some of their amazing stories.  Now, let me make it very clear that I am not a huge fan of watching football.  Maybe I will watch a play or two throughout the season, but I quickly lose interest and focus on something like Pinterest or checking the weather.  🙂  At this dinner it’s different because the player’s passion shines through and captures my attention.  We get to hear stories from their perspective when it’s 40 below zero up in Green Bay and how some of the words from the stadium carry over the field as they are about to make their play.  (Guess I better keep my voice down if I’m announcing a bathroom break or I’m ready for another beer at a game this fall. )

Sipping some Chardonnay.  They offered a scotch tasting station too.

Catching a shot of Anthony Munoz.   He was an offensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals for 13 seasons and has the injuries to prove it too.  Ouch!   Such a stand-up guy who lead the storytelling part of the evening.

A local artist from Artbeat Live painted while dinner was served.  He worked quickly and played music while he painted.  It was pretty interesting to watch him turn the painting upside down and right side up.  I wasn’t sure which way it went until the very end when it all came together. I think it took him less than 10 minutes to paint this work of art.

      Marv_Levy

We were fortunate enough to be seated next to Marv Levy and his wonderful wife, Fran.  This man has led an incredible life from attending Harvard for graduate studies in English history to enlisting in the Army Air Forces during WW II.  He went into coaching in the early 1970s for the Canadian Football League and went on to coach the Kansas City Chiefs and The Buffalo Bills.  He spoke first at the banquet and talked very highly and eloquently about his teams and the individuals he coached.  We were almost rolling out of our seats when he made mention of the fans from the opposing team and receiving lots of middle fingers during an away game.  Was not expecting that from a man with his demeanor.

I learned that Marv recently wrote a book called, ‘Between The Lies.’  (Looking forward to reading it!)  He asked if I wrote and when I told him about my blog he encouraged me to stick with it.  That meant a lot and I will try to follow his advice.

Here’s a shot of some of the players above wearing their tan Hall of Fame blazers.  Starting from the right: Ted Hendricks, Chris Doleman, Randall McDaniel, John Randle and Richard Dent directly behind him.  Sorry for the poor camera angle.  We got caught up and missed the good photo opportunity.

Such a fun night with many words of wisdom spoken.

    • Flower Power

Okay, so it snowed on Friday.  For at least four hours.  I thought I was having a nightmare when I first peeked outside.  Despite the abysmal weather, my flowers still managed to bloom.  If you don’t have any flowers around your yard I highly recommend buying an armful of whatever strikes your fancy at the store and placing them all over your house, pronto!  Let’s get this spring back on track.

Make sure you put some in a vase next to your bed.  These delicate Lily of the Valley smell like heaven.  Kate Middleton had a bouquet of them for her royal wedding.  My daughters love the tiny bell shape of each flower.  If you would like to plant some, they need a shady spot to grow so the north side of your home would be perfect.  Just be aware that they are poisonous so if you have very young children you may want to forgo this idea for the next few years.  My cat steers clear of it so she must know it’s bad news.

Or try planting a lilac bush.  These smell wonderful too and they are extremely hardy.  By hardy, I mean my husband will constantly hit it with the mower and the thing refuses to die.  He wasn’t a fan of it initially, but now he realizes it’s not going anywhere.

My husband isn’t a total hater of flowers.  He bought these roses for Mother’s Day and they still look as fresh as the day they were cut.

Mother Nature may be the boss who isn’t afraid to show it sometimes, but we can still perk up our moods and our indoor space with some freshly cut blooms.

Apologies for my absence.  My little ones have been sick, I was out of town…excuses, excuses.

In our quest to thirst our quench for Mad Men (less than one week to go), my husband and I checked AMC hoping to find some previous seasons airing last night.  Instead, we found a new series called Turn.  Did anyone else watch it?  They played back-to-back episodes which was great because 1) we don’t have On Demand and 2) we caught the last half hour, but got caught up when it aired again.

      o-AMC-TURN-facebook

Initially, I wasn’t sure if it was a movie or a TV series because AMC has a pretty good track record for amazing cast, set, costumes, etc.  We realized that it was set back in the days of the Revolutionary War.  After a little sleuthing on the internet, I saw that it was based on a non-fiction book entitled: Washington’s Spies: The Story of America’s First Spy Ring.

So, a few reasons why I liked Turn.

      • For one, I love the name and the backwards N in the title.  Ah, those redcoats.  Clever.

      • The attention to detail such as the calligraphic font used to describe the settings and locations is beautiful.   Sorry, but I couldn’t find any examples.

      • Two words: Seth Numrich.  Oh.  My.  Goodness.  Even though he was splattered with blood in the first scene I saw him in  -since I caught the end – I couldn’t get over his blue eyes and tousled, wavy hair.  Oh pardon me, I’m drooling.  [Pictured below on the right]

      • Aside from Seth, there are a few other stars that make the show stand out. Samuel Roukin, whose startling light gray eyes make him seem that much more menacing, plays a great villain.

      • Angus McFayden, who played Robert the Bruce in Braveheart has a substantial role too.

      • This is one of those historical pieces that is done so well that you want to learn more about that time period.  (Well, at least, I did).  I went straight to the library today and checked out a couple of historical books.  Nerd that I am, right?

If you liked The Patriot, I think you will love Turn.  Tell me what you think.

    • A Survival Guide For The Rest Of Winter

Posted at 7:49 pm by Lisa Cavallari
      Jan 25th

      1980-The-Shining-Screenshot-9

If you are like me you are itching for warmer weather, the ability to slip on some sandals and be on your merry way; not trudging through snow with biting wind nipping at your skin, slipping on ice with your hair blowing wildly all over your face-and this is just the little jaunt to the mailbox!  On the bright side, at least I am not writing the same line over and over again like poor Jack so things could always be worse.

For this post, I am offering up some ideas to make it through the rest of winter.  Whether you have kids to entertain or not, hopefully you can find at least one new thing to try.  By all means feel free to toss in your two cents as well.

      Things to do:

      1. Sign up for free workshops for adults or kids at Home Depot or $2 craft classes for kids at Michael’s.  The cake decorating and other classes for adults are around $25 and up.  Or try cooking classes, a public speaking course or a self-improvement class.  My friend Megan and I did this a lot in high school when we became bored or were looking to meet Mr Right Now.

      2. Plan your summer vacation.  A girl can dream, can’t she?

      3. Watch the Winter Olympics in February.

      4. Make or buy your children’s Valentines to pass out at school.  While you’re at it, make reservations for dinner or plan a few romantic gestures for your significant other.  Good deeds improve your mood and never go unnoticed.

      5. Speaking of good deeds.  Perform some random acts of kindness.  Volunteer at church, a soup kitchen or help someone out who deserves a break.

      6. Have a spa day where you spend all day in PJs and do manis and pedis, deep condition your hair, exfoliate and lather lotion all over dry skin.

      7. Plan an Oscar party.  (extra credit-try to watch most of the movies nominated)

      8. Burn off some steam and/or energy.  Hit the gym or take the kiddos to an indoor trampoline.  It will get your endorphins pumping.  Chocolate and wine  do the same thing so you can do that too.

      9. Read some new books.  For adults there’s The Goldfinch that is now number one on the bestseller’s list.  For kids, try some humorous books such as these.

      10. Go to the movies.  Our local theater has offered deep discounts on Tuesdays and even free movies if you have a rewards card through them.

      11. Try out some new foods that you’ve never tasted before or new recipes you’ve been meaning to try.  I am referring to you Pinterest junkies!  🙂

      12. Go bowling.

      13. Try a new beverage.  Yes, I am talking alcoholic beverages.  It’s an excuse to invite some friends over to sample new wines, mixed drinks or whatever floats your boat.  For kids, use some sparkling water and add it to different flavored juices.  Toss in some raisins and perform a science experiment on how the carbonation makes them “dance.”

      14. Suck it up and head outside if it’s 30 degrees or above.  Make a snowman, an igloo, go sledding, skiing, snowboarding, ice skating or the zoo.

      15. Go shopping.  Personally, I found IKEA is extremely kid-friendly when I was there recently.  Kids eat free on Tuesdays, they have a reserved play area, low toilets and sinks, and gives you an excuse to grab some inexpensive things to spruce up or organize your space.

      16. I found this list of things to do in Chicago on Pinterest, but I’m sure there are unique things to do wherever you live.

Whatever you do, don’t end up like Jack.  Hang in there, 52 days left until spring.
