      Gravel Bar Wine

This post is a 3 for 1 because I was able to enjoy some great wines this past week as well as catch up on some much needed time with friends.

The first was Gravel Bar Alluvial Red Blend from Washington’s Columbia Valley.  I love wine from this region.  It’s completely underrated and with the great mix of soils and geological composition, you get a superb wine such as this one.  The blend is composed of mostly Cabernet with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petite Verdot rounding it out nicely.  This is a wonderfully balanced and smooth wine.  It’s not too chewy, heavy or fruit heavy.  There’s great flavors of cherry, vanilla, chocolate and with a great finish.

If you’re local you can drink wine at Neo Pizzeria in St Charles.  We went on Wednesday when some of the wines on the menu were half price.  We went through 2 bottles of red, ordered 2 pizzas, a plate of Carpaccio and all under $25 a person.  I call that a very good night!

This wine can also be purchased for $16.99 at Binny’s.

The next wine I will not spend too much time rehashing because it was revolting.  Sorry.  I won’t mince words.  I usually enjoy drinking under the Chateau Ste. Michelle label, but their Sauvingnon Blanc was rather cloying and fruity on the palate.  I was expecting crisp and light so no sense in drinking bad wine.  Dump it and move onto the next.

The next was my favorite!  I’ve sang the praises for Educated Guess Cabernet in the past, but now it’s their Chardonnay I’m loving.  As the label depicts, this Sonoma winery put lots of time and thought into making this wine.  They use both barrel and stainless steel fermentation to give this wine the perfect balance between minerality and creaminess.  I could easily drink this one for the rest of the summer.  There’s not a heavy, oak-filled aftertaste or tart finish, just great flavors of pear, apple (and I swore maybe a hint of rose petal!) with luscious notes of vanilla at the end.

You can find it at your local wine store for about $19.

This Chardonnay from Sonoma is another easy-to-drink, anytime wine.  Chalk Hill is an area in the Russian River Valley that boasts volcanic soil and warmer climates creating beautiful wines that are more concentrated. When poured, this wine is medium in color like that of straw.  You will taste pear, apple, toasty oak and vanilla with a smooth minerality on the finish.  The wine is aged in French oak which gives it that spicy, subtle flavor and smooth taste.

You can find it at Costco for $14.99.  Enjoy it with mild cheeses, seafood or poultry.

    • Wine On Wednesday: Dominant Seven

      Dominant Seven

The hot weather is here and you won’t here a peep of complaint from me.  This is the perfect opportunity to sip and share some good whites with you all.  The first one is Dominant Seven’s 2012 Chardonnay.  At first glance, this wine label appeared to be dominatrix in nature.  Am I the only sicko who thought this?  Thought so.  😉   For those of you who are musically inclined, you probably already knew that this label is referring to the dominant 7th chord commonly used by musical artists like Beethoven and The Beatles.  I never learned to play an instrument unless you count…the recorder ( were you thinking of something else?  You really have your head in the gutter today. I love it!) and I am terrible at reading notes so I’ll just take the winemakers word on that one.

Back to the wine.  It’s golden in color when poured and tastes of apple, pear, pineapple with notes of creamy vanilla and buttery oak.  I was pleasantly surprised at how drinkable this wine turned out to be!  Pair it with sharp white cheddar, chicken or lobster.

You can find this at Meijer or any local wine shop for about $8.99. A great any day wine.

      Cheers my dears.

    • Wine On Wednesday: Paraduxx

      Paraduxx Wine

To celebrate our belated wedding anniversary, my husband and I went out for drinks last Sunday.  Since the weather was gorgeous, Chris suggested Atwaters in Geneva.  Have you been?  It’s a perfect place to relax, ponder life and enjoy the Fox River view.

The wine list is amazing there.  We must have perused it for a good ten minutes before we arrived at a decision.   There were many strong choices which gives us a good excuse for returning, but the Paraduxx stood out.  The vinter is Duckhorn who makes a damn good Merlot, but this wine is a blend of Zinfandel-to give it spice, Cabernet-making it juicy and robust, and Merlot-to mellow out the flavors and give it an oh so very smooth finish.  Wow!  I would already like to drink this one again.  They served the wine perfectly chilled which makes a big difference in taste; ideally reds should be between 62-65 degrees. I looked this fact up so stop with eye roll.  I am not that much of a wine nerd-yet 😉 Try it with the cheese plate and your life will be complete.  Seriously.  Who can be unhappy sipping dynamite wine and enjoying it with pefectly paired cheeses?
