      Penfolds

Happy last day of September!  Chilly weather equals a change over to red wine, don’t you think?  For you fans of white, not to worry, I have a new white to write about just as soon as I try it.  Which I hope will be over the weekend when we are planning to grill salmon.

The Penfolds Cabernet Shiraz was compliments of a good friend who also happens to love wine.  She shared this bottle with me recently and we both agreed that the color was beautiful and deep, the flavors very smooth and typical of a Cabernet with lots of fruit like cherries with a spicy finish from the Shiraz.  You can buy this wine at your local wine store for just under $20.  I would save this wine for a night to hang out with friends that you haven’t seen in a while…which is exactly what we did.  🙂

      Rating:  🍷🍷🍷/4 wine glasses

Thank you Debbie for a fun night.  Let’s plan another one very soon!

    • W.O.W. Chateau De La Coste: Margaux

      Chateau De la Coste

Wine On Wednesday is back!  It’s been over a month since my last post on wine and, frankly I needed to detox a little.  😉  In all seriousness, where has the time gone?  I feel like school just started, but soon it will be a month that my oldest has been back with her classmates.  Then I thought that with school starting I would have plenty of time to write.  Ah, no.  Extracirricular activities, homework, volunteering at school, etc.  Where the heck is the pause button?!

So this wine was a gift from a dear friend along with a very cute wine glass for simply picking up her mail and watering some plants while her family went on vacation over the summer.  Michelle Y, I will gladly do that for you any day and a gift is never expected or necessary… but always appreciated.

This wine is produced in the Margaux appellation of the Bordeaux region.  This wine is soft, subtle and elegant with flavors of lush berries and a hint of cinnamon.  The blend is 50% Cabernet, 45% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.  A very easy wine to drink with asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, mushroom risotto or pair with Montrechet (goat) cheese.

My palette is still adjusting to appreciate the softer wines so here’s my rating:

🍷🍷🍷 out of 4 wine glasses.

      Cheers!

    • Wine On Wednesday – Toasted Head

      NToasted Head

Yet another long overdue post to share with you all.  This wine was a winner at a wine tasting from a few months ago.  We did a blind tasting and this Chardonnay from Toasted Head blew the competition away.  It tasted of toasted oak (obviously from the name) and creamy vanilla with a hot finish (again, refer to the label).

We tried this wine again over the summer with a salad of spinach, feta, toasted almonds and a lemon poppy-seed vinaigrette.  It was delicious!

      Rating: 3 1/2 out of 🍷🍷🍷🍷

You can find this wine at any local grocer, or even Target for about $10.

Sorry for the short post, but I have to get back to reading The Girl On The Train.  So good!

      Cheers my dears!

Thank you to Rochelle for introducing us to this lovely wine.

      Black Cat

Although this post sounds more appropriate for the month of October, I could not wait that long to write about it.  This wine proves that I still have a loooong way to go on learning more about wine and the foods to pair it with.

Normally, I like a big, bold, classic Napa red like a Cabernet, but this wine was much more subtle, refined and, at times, a tad sophisticated for my inexperienced palette.   Should this intimidate any wine drinkers?  Hell no!  I say drink on and keep learning.

So back to the wine.  This was a 2012 Cabernet Franc that we enjoyed over the weekend with a good friend and his trusty canine friend Mr. Jensen.   The color is deep and beautiful and the taste was smooth and very easy to drink.  We planned to enjoy it with fresh steak filets, but the bottle was gone long before we even fired up the grill.

There is a great story behind the winemaker and I may have to save that for another post because we would like to visit her vineyard at some point in the not-too-distant future.

This wine can be purchased if you are a member of The Black Cat Wine Club, but there are others on the Black Cat website that range between $55 -$75.

🍷🍷🍷 1/2 out of 4 wine glasses (and only because of my lack of experience drinking Franc)

      Cheers my dears!

Thank you to Hobie for a fun and relaxing weekend.  We enjoyed the wine, great company and laughs.  😉  Also, a big thank you for the generous Christmas gift which was a lovely bottle of 2012 Syrah and gorgeous corkscrew from this vineyard.
